Did I put a permanent dent in my nose from wearing glasses after Rhinoplasty?

It's been almost three weeks since I had rhinoplasty, and today I wore glasses for the first time for a few hours. I normally wear contacts but my eyes are really irritated today. I took them off and now there is a small indentation in the bridge. Will this go away?

I would check with your surgeon to see what their policy is in regards to wearing glasses after rhinoplasty.  I normally advise patients to wait 6 weeks before wearing glasses after the procedure.  If you only wore the glasses for a few hours, there should not be any permanent harm to your nose.  If you need to wear the glasses again, you could use tape to attach them to your forehead so that they are not resting on your nose.

Avoid
wearing glasses for at least a month after Rhinoplasty
surgery. Glasses apply pressure to the bridge of the nose, which can cause indentations.
Contact lenses are fine to wear after 5- 7 days post Rhinoplasty surgery.

Dear SydneyIt is best to contact your surgeon to get first hand instructions regarding wearing glasses after surgery. In my experience, after 2 weeks, the nasal bones are set and hard to displace with ease. The problem with glasses, is that if they get bumped, the force is directed to nasal bones and can displace them. I would suggest you contact your surgeon for instructions. I suspect the dent is just secondary to edema changes and will be gone by tomorrow morning.

Dear Sydney, Yes, this should go away. Typically we have our patients discontinue the use of glasses for four to six weeks after rhinoplasty. If patients need to wear glasses then we do look at the glasses and determine which type is best for wear. Oftentimes I give my patients some thin clear tape and instruct them how to lightly tape the glasses to the area between the brows. This can be done easily and takes any pressure of wearing glasses off the table. Speak with your surgeon and their policies. Best regards, Michael V. Elam, M.D.
