Hello I’m 42 years old and have given birth to 2 daughter more than 10 years ago and am looking at breast implants however I was diagnosed with an auto immune skin condition pemphigus vulgaris 2 years ago and went on prednisolone and am now clear with the occasional lesions in the mouth but is treated with steroid cream Is implants suitable for my condition Thanks

it is hard to tell for sure without an examination. You will need to get a clearance from your doctor prior to surgery. If you are considering surgery, I would suggest you consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination, you will get more information and recommendations.

Thank you for you interesting question. You really bring up two questions. The first is whether breast implants can exacerbate autoimmune diseases. The answer to the question is uncertain but unlikely. As of this time there are no studies which conclude that gel implants or saline filled gel implants can induce or worsen autoimmune conditions. The more germane question is will the surgical experience cause a flare-up of you illness. The literature shows examples of patients having worsening of pemphigus vulgaris following surgery, either early or weeks later. I would consult with your dermatologist and discuss your options. There is no right or wrong answer. Plenty of surgeons would be willing to give you breast  implants and others would not. Some may recommend saline as possibly being a safer choice

Yes you still may be a candidate for breast augmentation despite your condition.  Visit with a board certified plastic surgeon near you for a consultation.  During this visit you will review your medical history with your surgeon as well as medications that you take.  Based on the findings your surgeon will advise you if breast augmentation is appropriate for you.
