Swollen glabella muscle 6 weeks after Botox. Will it go away when Botox wears off?

Question

I had 12 units of Botox injected in the muscle above my inner brow and the muscle became swollen after the injection. I thought it was a hematoma but it hasn’t resolved. The injector didnt provide any answers. One of the docs here said that when the muscle gets injected it gets thicker and a lump can form from the muscle contracting. Not sure what he means. Even when I don’t make any facial expressions the bump is still there. Will it go away when Botox wears off?

This is difficult to answer without pictures, but this may be due to placement. Botox results last up to 3-4 months and can be softened with venus legacy and thermage treatments. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist. Best, Dr. Emer

Sounds like your Botox treatment was not performed in the best of fashions. The glabella consists of a number of muscles and those muscles need to be injected with botox after a physical exam. Once the corrugators and the procerus are injected they will flatten out and become much smaller in appearance.

Over time Botox should make the muscle smaller.  That is why Botox is so popular in the masseter muscle since it shrinks the muscle over time.  However, the muscle should not get  bigger like you are describing. Without photos it is difficult to understand and perhaps it is irritation from the needle.

Perhaps, the area involved is not swollen, but you may have a droop.  Sometimes this happens due to Botox relaxing the muscle above the area causing the area to drop.  This usually resolves within a 6 week to 3 month period once the Botox begins to wear off.  It can also be a hematoma from the injection. If so, it can take another few weeks to resolve.  Either way, this should just go away on its own.

Not a typical reaction.Typically the muscles that are injected with Botox get smaller overtime.It is only 6week since your injector treated you, so perhaps there is still some swelling from the injection fluid and needle irritation.Best. Dr Brecht
