Small bumps and dent on lip from Juvederm 9 days post injections (Photo)

Question

Hi, I got my lips done with juvederm ultra 9 days ago for the first time.we only did 1/2 syringe and mainly focused on the upper lip. After a few days the majority of the swelling went down but now I have small little bumps noticeable when I smile or pout. I also just noticed an indent right next to where the bumps begin. Should I wait the two weeks for a follow up? I do plan to add more also.

Hello Mia. I believe your injection has created swelling and this has led to your bumps. You should re-evaluated theses areas with 
 your injector in 2 to 3 weeks. See my video below on ways to lower swelling.

Hi and thank you for your question.  Although there is still some swelling after 9 days, this seems to be an issue of uneven distribution.  The left side of your upper lip has been over-injected, which is also causing the dent to look more accentuated. You may want to revisit your injector and have them take down the left side and add a very small amount in the center of your lip where the divot is. You can also try waiting another 4 or 5 days and gently massaging at home. Hope this helps. Best of luck.

There can be some swelling and/or lumps after lip injections which can last 1-2 weeks. You can apply firm pressure between two fingers on the lips for a few days, for 5 mins a time, in order to help decrease swelling and even out the lumps. If you're unhappy with your final results you can have it reversed with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. Best, Dr. Emer

You should wait at least 2 weeks to see if this will even out.  It not, you either have to have it removed, or try to add more to make it smooth.You always want the lower lip larger than the upper lip, and by adding only to the upper you have reversed this.  So it will not look natural.  Make sure you get some volume in the lower lip to balance the large upper lip.

Dear Mia2oh,Juvederm has significant swelling post injection. I always apply pressure on lips right after injections in order to avoid lumps. I would follow up with you plastic surgeon but typically I tell all my patients to wait a full two weeks.  Generally at 2 weeks they are happy and glad they didn't dissolve.  Dissolving is unpredictable as well.Daniel Barrett, MD, MHA, MS

It can take 1-2 weeks for final results. I would wait a full 2 weeks before judging the results. If it is after the two week wait, you can have the filler reversed with hyaluronidase.

Thanks for your question and the photos – they are helpful.  We always want these injections given in the offices of board certified dermatologists or plastic surgeons as we are the true experts in how best to use these fillers.  Swelling and some lumps can be expected in many cases and ice and gentle massage may help.  If they are still present at two weeks return to your provider to see what can be done at that point.

To begin with your left upper lip was much stronger than your right upper lip, so I would have only injected your right side; Furthermore, I feel that you lips are strong enough and do not require further enlargement. The nodules can be caused by overfilling which is your main problem. Please consult a board certified plastic surgeon to help you fix your concerns.
