Does scalp biopsy destroy the hair follicles?

when you biopsy the scalp the hairs are removed so yes they are destroyed however sutures are put in the skin to bring the surrounding hairs together.  this should result in an unnoticeable change in hair long term.  Best, Dr. Emer.

A scalp biopsy is not always needed to diagnose hair loss. In fact, most of the time, with a careful review of your medical history and details of your hair loss and and up close examination of your scalp a diagnosis can be made. Often blood tests are needed as well. Out of every 100 patients I see with hair loss, even complex cases, a biopsy might be needed in only 2 or 3 of these patients. But to answer your question - yes, a biopsy damages hair and leaves a scar. A biopsy involves removal of a 4 mm round punch of skin and hair. The hair removed is removed permanently and all punch biopsies leave a small scar.

Scalp Biopsies must be in the area that is thought to have the problem that the dcotr is looking for. It will have to be a full thickness biopsy measuring about 3mm across and yes, it will probably remove the hair follicles being biopsied.
