Hi! I got a blepheroplasty 18 months ago and have been left with these very obvious white scars. They are flat on the inner corners and atrophic toward the outer edges of both eyelids. I’m a bit bummed because my doctor told me the scars would be almost invisible, which is far from true. I’m wondering if there’s anything I can do to minimize their appearance. What can I expect realistically?
Answer: Post-op scars Hello! My name is Jessica, I am a physician assistant, and one of the providers at Aesthetic Skin in Winnetka and Chicago. This is a great question. I'm sorry to hear about your experience with the scars after your blepharoplasty; it can be disheartening when results don't meet your expectations. One effective option to minimize the appearance of white scars is CO2 laser resurfacing. This treatment uses a focused laser to remove the outer layers of damaged skin, stimulating collagen production and promoting smoother, healthier skin in the process. CO2 laser resurfacing can significantly improve the texture and color of scars, making them less noticeable over time. I hope this helps and best of luck!

Answer: How to Minimize the Appearance of White Scars on Eyelids After Blepharoplasty Hello, I'm sorry to hear about your concerns regarding the scars after your blepharoplasty. White scars, particularly on the delicate skin of the eyelids, can be challenging to treat, but there are several approaches you can consider to help minimize their appearance: Topical Treatments: Silicone-based gels or sheets can be effective in reducing the appearance of scars. These products help to hydrate the scar tissue and can improve its appearance over time. Laser Therapy: Fractional lasers or other laser treatments can help to resurface the skin and improve the texture and color of scars. These treatments promote collagen production and can make the scars less noticeable. Microneedling: This technique involves using fine needles to create micro-injuries in the scar tissue, stimulating the body’s natural healing process and promoting collagen and elastin production. This can improve the texture and appearance of atrophic scars. Steroid Injections: In some cases, steroid injections can help to flatten and soften raised scars, though this might be less applicable if your scars are already flat. Dermal Fillers: For atrophic (sunken) scars, dermal fillers can be used to raise the depressed areas to the level of the surrounding skin, making the scars less noticeable. Chemical Peels: Light to medium chemical peels can help to improve the skin texture and reduce the visibility of scars. However, the delicate skin of the eyelids requires careful handling to avoid irritation. Camouflage Makeup: While not a permanent solution, high-quality camouflage makeup can effectively cover up scars and improve your confidence in the short term. Consultation with a Dermatologist: It’s essential to consult with a board-certified dermatologist or a plastic surgeon who specializes in scar treatment. They can evaluate your specific case and recommend the most appropriate treatments based on your skin type and the characteristics of your scars. Realistically, while these treatments can significantly improve the appearance of scars, it’s important to have realistic expectations. Complete elimination of scars is unlikely, but their visibility can be greatly reduced with appropriate treatment. Best of luck, and I hope you find a solution that works well for you. Warm regards,

Answer: A resurfacing laser can help even out the skin's texture and tone to reduce appearance of a scar. Our office has many different treatments for scars depending on the depth of atrophy or hypertrophy. Scars require a combination approach using our HI DEF protocol which uses a combination of lasers, topical scar modulation, and RF treatments to pixelate scars, improve contour, reduce hyperpigmentation, and improve the visibility of the scars so that they are no longer visible in ambient light. Everyone has a unique pattern of scarring and we employ our HIDEF technique to improve texture, color, contour, and topography. We often use a combination of treatments that begin with a careful examination to examine the micro texturing of the acne scars. Atrophic scars and indented scars can benefit from injectable fillers such as Radiesse, Sculptra, and Restylane with or without subcision to remove tethered scars and atrophic depression. Hyper-redness in scars can be improved with V beam laser, Excel V, BBL, IPL, and Venus RF to improve the redness and reduce the visibility of deep scars. Fractional Thulium laser and clear & brilliant can also reduce the inflammation and redness of the scar when combined with topical therapy. Fractional lasers such as Fraxel, erbium, and CO2 laser can be combined with radio frequency and also fractional RF to improve textual issues and microtopography. Subcision and TCA cross are also used for deep ice pick scars and narrow valley scars in order to improve the micro texture. Above all, our combination approach with our clinical nurses and board-certified plastic surgeons can improve the quality of your skin by using at home Melarase creams combined with PRP treatments in our office to improve your skin quality and tone. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with an experienced team of experts in order to reduce your scarring. Finally, hyperpigmentation of scars can be improved with at-home Melarase AM, Melarase PM, and Melapads to help reduce active PIH and melanin deposition. Best, Dr. Karamanoukian Realself100 Surgeon
