When does the frosting come off? Do we need to wash it or peel it off?

I’m in the process of my tattoo removal on my wrist and it is starting to frost now. The stinging is slowly going away. It is a very small area. Do I wash/rub the frost off or let it fall naturally?

Frosting is typical, but I don't recommend trying to rub it or pick it. It will go away soon. Tattoos should be removed with q switched or pico lasers. We also use the pfd patch to help speed up the process. It will take a series of treatments, but it's difficult to determine how many sessions will be needed. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a laser tattoo removal expert. Frosting happens when we laser the tattoo and is more of an immediate reaction.  It tends to go away over the next hour and then will look red or irritated.  The area needs to be covered with vaseline or triple antibiotic and we usually cover it and recommend sun block and sun avoidance.

White "frosting" is carbon dioxide, released and rise to the surface of the skin as a result of laser energy absorption by the ink's pigment.  These bubbles appear white and opaque, giving the skin appearance of chalk.  It is a temporary side effect, which is perfectly normal and lasts for 15-30 minutes after treatment. Frosting of the skin occurs as a reaction between the ink and laser and this is temporary.  This will self-resolve in 5-10 minutes.  With subsequent treatments as more ink gets removed, the frosting typically becomes less evident.  Consult with an experienced laser provider.
