How effective is micro-needling? Should it be done before a facelift?

Microneedling is a new and wonderful way to rejuvenate your skin or to treat acne scars. Many find the microneedling pens to be useful, and we find that in addition, the big-box needles (which are radiofrequency based) can give the skin a great result which may make the facelift not needed, in some cases. But as an adjunct, this can help “prep” the skin and make the skin even more able to tolerate the facelift procedure.The big-box needles like the EndyMed Intensif are becoming more and more popular in the US as we learn the benefits of these devices and how best to use them, so find the right office — a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon — and get the proper consultation and get the best results you can by having someone very trained and skilled do the procedure.

In my office I offer the Eclipse MicroPen skin needling system. A MicroPen
skin needling treatment
allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self-repair mechanism by creating
micro “injuries” in the skin which triggers new collagen synthesis. By
stimulating collagen production so can see an improvement in fine lines, acne
scars, stretch marks, tone, texture, etc.

There
are many good scientific studies showing that medical micro-needling really
works. In a recent study,
medical micro-needling was shown to increase epidermal thickness by 140% and
the collagen and elastin bundles in the skin were increased and thickened as
well. In my office we use the ProCell Therapies system which combines
motorized micro-needling with concentrated human growth factor serums made from
human stem cells. Because micro-needling creates micro-channels in the skin
which enhance penetration of topical serums and medications, it dramatically
increases their effectiveness. Up to 80% of product can penetrate into the skin
compared to 7 to 10% with normal topical application without micro-needling.
