Compression stocking after sclerotherapy?

Question

I had my first session of sclerotherapy on both legs and my doctor told me to wear the stocking only during the daytime and for just 3 days. I have read many posts that state compression should be work constantly for up to 10 days. Should I be concerned that he is limiting the stockings to only 3 days?

I feel strongly that properly fitted graduated compression stockings should be worn around the clock for the first week at least.  This means 24/7, even while you shower. Two clinical studies that I published demonstrate that 7 days is ideal. The less time the stockings are worn the more likely the veins are to return and the more likely you are to develop pigmentation after treatment.To further enhance treatment results, I recommend that patients continue to wear a lighter graduated compression stocking while standing for an addition 2-3 weeks.

Thank you for your question. The first 3 days are the most critical, but if you can tolerate 10 days, then that is even better.  Compliance is an issue past 3 days. I hope this helps!

I have all my pateints try to commit to 7 days compression after sclero of any veins (small or large).  however, 3 days is likely okay for small ones and longer for larger (reticular) veins.  If foaming was used (over just liquid) you dont have to worry as much about the compression but still should do so.  I suggest going to an expert for treatment.  Best, Dr. Emer.

wear compression hose continuously for 2 weeks following sclerotherapy. You may
experience more bruising, swelling and higher risk of staining and pigmentation
if you choose to forgo the compression hose for 2 weeks.

The length of time to wear compression hose post sclerotherapy treatment is controversial.  Some recommend no compression and some recommend up to 6 weeks.  Years ago I use to recommend long time compression but over the years I have monitored my patients with decreasing length of compression and I have found that 2 days of compression for sclerotherapy is adequate.

The vein literature is full of articles that have looked at this issue and there is no consensus.I recommend that my patients wear stockings for as much as possible in the first 2 weeks, even at night, taking the stockings off only during showering. After that, I recommend a total of 3 months during the day.Others recommend 3 days or 2 weeks total and a whole range between 3 days and 3 months.I would follow the instructions given to you by the physician who did the sclerotherapy.
