Question

Hello, I've had a lot of pdl on my birthmark which covers half my forehead and eye. It seems to have made little difference. Is nd yag suitable? My dermatologist says no due to scarring, but research seems to indicate it can work on resistent PWS. The clearing in the middle has always been there.

An Nd: YAG laser is an option for some vascular birthmarks but this does not necessarily mean that it is the best option.  The best option for a treatment plan is one that combines safety and efficacy for the condition.  In our practice, we consider the pulsed dye lasers as the the "gold standard" for your condition.  In a few cases wherein birthmarks have been more resistant, the Nd: YAG laser has offered mild to moderate improvement at best.  The biggest challenge is to choose a practice that has the correct technology, pursues best practices, has experience with these types of birthmarks, and tailors the treatment plan based upon the condition as it changes throughout the treatment plan.

The best way to treat port wine stains are with a combination of lasers (pulsed dye, proyellow, excel V). It may take a series of treatments. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with an expert. Best, Dr. Emer
