Do I need to have blood test before taking Finasteride?

I was told by someone (not a doctor) that I probably should have a blood test before taking Finasteride because the medication changes my hormone levels. Is this true?

In my opinion,  finasteride lowers the PSA by approximately 50%.. I recommend that you get a baseline PSA  and follow the recommendations of your urologist for follow up testing and examination.

No.  I generally prescribe the drug without a blood test.  The diagnosis is clinical and most men, especially those with recent onset of androgenic alopecia, respond well to the drug.

I recommend you get a baseline PSA with your urologist before starting Finasteride.  Make sure you follow up with your urologist.  Finasteride can also cause sexual side effects.  Always seek treatment from a qualified physician.

If a male is over 40, they may consider discussing with their physician whether a baseline PSA (prostate specfic antigen) is important. But baseline hormone testing is not needed. Yes the medication does lower DHT but following levels is not particularly relevant.

You do  not need to have blood tests before taking finasteride. The HAIRCHECK test if your doctor can do it will tell you how well you are responding to the drug if it is done prior and one year after taking the drug
