Blisters after ruby laser for freckles?

Question

1 week ago I had treatment with the alexandrite laser for freckles across my cheeks after carrying out a successful patch test before. The treated freckles turned dark brown and fell off on days 3/4. I went back yesterday to have treatment for the nose and chin. The dr. informed me that they would use the ruby laser. Today the spots look like burns and are raised like pimples.The spots are a reddish brown colour and have not gone dark brown. Is this usual and what steps should I be taking?

Thank you for your question.  It is a little unusual that they would switch devices after you had such great results with the Alex, my guess is they are renting and they used the device they had that day.  That being said Ruby lasers while historically are q switched and used for tattoo removal can be used for pigment.  Typically Ruby lasers for pigment require multiple sessions and that is why other lasers have now become more common place in treating pigmented lesions.  If your treated areas look like burns you should follow up with your physician immediately for further evaluation and management, as q switching produces high intensity in short intervals and can lead to burns.  Regards, Dr. Matt Elias
