Will I lose weight once the water retention has gone and last bit of swelling?

Great question. Liposuction is not a weigh loss procedure. You will see a change in waist inches rather than in weight numbers. Keep in mind, it can take up to six months for all the swelling to subside. Keep following up with your surgeon to rule out any fluid collection.

swelling takes months to go away and liposuction rarely equates to a true "weight" loss unless you diet aggressively after treatment. you will see "contour" changes.

Unfortunately, liposuction is not weight reduction surgery. Instead, liposuction helps sculpt the body by taking away fat from unwanted areas. You are in very early stages of recovery following your surgery and are bound to have a lot of tissue swelling. Once the swelling has settled in about 3 to 6 months, you will appreciate the reduction in volume of fat in the treated areas.

I understand your concern and it is quite normal to be concerned about the outcome following a liposuction surgery. However, you are still in the very early stages of the healing process.Your will need to be patient at this moment and follow what your surgeon has instructed you to do post operatively.At the early stage of the healing process, the tissues are still swollen. Once the swelling subsides  you will be able to see the final result of your surgery.

leeds2903I appreciate your concern, however I am afraid that there is some confusion regarding liposuction and desired outcomes. Liposuction is not a weight loss device and one should not go into this procedure expecting to lose pounds.  In reality it is an excellent device for removing unwanted fat in areas of the body non-responsive to diet and exercise.After liposuction, many patients become concerned because they feel bloated and appear to be even bigger than they were prior to the operation.  This is secondary to postoperative swelling and can take as long as six months to completely resolve. After removal of 6 L of fat, I am certain that you will see an improvement in your overall contour once all the swelling has resolved. Try to stay patient and positive and follow up with your plastic surgeon. Good luck.

When we think about dieting and exercise we really are discussing internal fat. Internal fat is the fat inside your abdomen around your organs. This is the fat that  the is lost when more calories go out than come in which happens with dieting and exercise. This fat is the most important fat to lose as it’s the fat that will help your heart and will help make you healthier and extend your life



The fat that is removed in liposuction is external fat or the fat that is under the skin. Ideally we remove stubborn fat that is genetically or hormonally (after pregnancy and age) designed to not leave your body. This is the fat that we target in liposuction
That being said there is still some weight loss once the water weight is gone!

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, but a contouring one. To achieve the best results, and to have the safest surgery, it is best if you reach your goal weight before the procedure(s).
In general, you need to be physically healthy and at a stable weight, have realistic expectations, non-smoker and your BMI needs to be 33 or less.
l recommend you to make an appointment with a board certified plastic surgeon to talk about your goals and anything you need to know.

Thank you for your question. Liposuction is not a weight loss operation. You may see 2-3 pounds loss later but not significant loss. Healthy diet and exercise leads to weight loss by loosing fat around organs.
