I'm an 18 year old Australian. Grandfather has thinning hair and my father was bald out of choice (?) at 24. I've been told it's more lighting than a bald spot, but wanted to check.

Yes, it would appear there is hair loss. Be sure to see a knowledgable physician for an in person examination of the scalp

If you are noticing a pattern like your parents or grandparents, then you may have hereditary hair loss. I would recommend you seek consultation from a hair specialist for the answer. Most likely, this is androgenetic alopecia which causes about 95% of hair loss. If so, there are many medical options for you to consider to help slow down the hair loss.
