Is It Okay to Get Laser Lipo With Von Willebrand Disease?

I'm 21 years old. My mother has Von Willebrand disease, and I am being tested for it soon. I'm hoping to get laser liposuction this year, but if I have VWD is it still safe to go through with it?

Thank you for your question. For this and all disease systems of this stature, your will need your doctor managing your VWD, and surgeon to discuss your condition, risks, and allow them to provide you a multidisciplinary approach to determine if surgery is in your best interest. I hope this helps.

I wholeheartedly agree with the other recommendations to have your hemotologist involved.  I do have some suggestions to add.  My partner does have a patient just like you so we had to address this question recently.  We do tumescent liposuction only, which by nature permits more profound and thorough hemostasis or bleeding control than liposuction done under general anesthesia.  I would recommend that your hematologist speak with your surgeon and that depending on the severity of your disease pre-operative treatment with desmopresin and/or Factor VIII be considered and that tumescent (anesthesia) liposuction be considered as the preferred technique.

For any surgical procedure, you should get a medical clearance from a hematologist if you have Von Wiilebrand's disease or any other hematolocial disorder. Having a completely elective procedure may not be worth the risk of uncontrolled bleeding. Your hematologist can decide if giving you treatment prior to surgery would be safe.
