Is there any way to know if my tattoo artist went too deep?

I just started treatment to get all three of my tattoos removed.I'm super worried, because I'm just afraid my artist went too deep & the ink won't respond to the laser treatments.I already paid for a package deal, which is 6 treatments with a Q-switched laser. The laser technician told me that there's a lot of white frosting so that's a good sign that the laser is working, but I don't know how true that is. I know I won't see results right away... or even far from it... But I just wish I knew that I'm on the road to seeing results. All three tattoos are all black ink. They're fairly recent (1 - 3 years old). I'm just terror stricken that I'm going to spend the next year waiting for results that are never going to come due to a heavy handed artist! Are there any signs that may either put my mind at ease (no, he likely didn't go too deep for the laser to work), or any signs that might confirm my fears (yes, this is how you know if your artist went too deep)? I guess I'd like to know if I need to start researching excision...
