With this type and severity of accident, full and complete regrowth might not occur in all people. However, you’ll know in 6-9 months how much will occur. It could be significant regrowth to provide coverage. Be sure to keep close follow up with your physicians during this early healing phase as there may be strategies to maximize growth.

Whether or not the hair will regrow depends mostly on the depth of injury.  If the abrasion stayed above the level of the hair follicles, the area where the hair regenerates from, and the hair should regrow.  If the injury penetrated to a level deeper than the hair follicles than it is possible that the hair will not grow back.  For the time being I would recommend cleaning the area a few times daily with hydrogen peroxide on cotton balls and then covering with a thin layer of Aquaphor or Vaseline.  This should create an optimal condition for regrowth.  Time will tell whether the hairs will regrow back or not, but if they do not hair transplantation may be an option depending on the condition of the scalp.  I hope this helps, good luck!!

The hair follicle arises from the deep dermis. Depending upon the depth of the abrasion, hair regreowth may be normal, impaired, or non-existent. Post injury infection is the cause of many instances of permanent hair loss. It is important to maintain a regimen of frequent local wound care to prevent infection. A superficial abrasion may seal within a week or two, while a deeper abrasion may take up to a month. Hair regrowth should be noted within 3 months.
Until the wound is sealed, it may be of value to seek the opinion of a plastic surgeon to ensure appropriate wound management.
