Fractionated non-ablative Palomar Starlux 1540 results duration.

Question

I had mild acne scars, then I had 6 fractionated non-ablative Palomar Starlux 1540 treatments and 3 microneedlings. I am happy with the results (around 60% better) but I live in fear to see them disappear, I even have read doctors writing about laser results during around 5 years and then leaving skin aged. I am 25, caucasian female, no smoking, and with healty diet. I always read about these treatments' results' duration in the context of wrinkles and aging but what about atrophic acne scars?

Thank you for your question. Results with the fractional lasers on acne scars is a very good treatment. The laser treatments help to improve the skin not to age it. Consult with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon for alternate treatment options.

These laser and microneedling treatments do a few things.  They help to break up deep scar tissue, and also stimulate new collagen production.  These results will be long lasting.  As we age, there can be some loss of collagen and fat, so in the distant future ( age 45 and up )you may see some deepening of scars.  You should be using some good skin care.  Retinols and glycolic acid creams can help with continued collagen growth which will help maintain your skin.

The results you get from the Palomar 1540 ( a very old but still effective wavelength, now marketed by Cynosure) is permanent. That is the good news. There is however a very complex interplay between texture, tone and volume loss as well as acne scars. Atrophic scars can be distensible, i.e. stretch skin, scar improves. This type of acne scar presents later in life when the loss of fat and collagen makes this type of scar more noticeable. The good news ?
