I was just made aware of the Venus Viva for pitted acne scarring/overall texture improvement after a consult. A derm. recommended this over the TCA peel; however, I've heard TCA peel is best. I've already had stronger lasers (co2) which have caused further scarring so I'm looking for a less abrasive tx. I get microneedling tx's but looking to smoothen out my overall complexion. Since I planned on a TCA peel, I'm undecided on which is best for the scarring. Venus Viva or TCA Peel?
Answer: Improving acne scars with TCA peel or Venus Viva--add lasers, microneedling/prp, punch excision, fillers A combination approach will give the most improvement. These types of scars need a combination of lasers, microneedling/prp, TCA cross, punch excision and fillers. It will take a series of treatments and may need treatments to maintain. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with an acne scarring expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Answer: Scars need multiple modalities I agree with Dr Emer wholeheartedly. Scars are difficult to treat well. many single approach options give some improvement, but in reality- we need to do everything available to get skin texture, quality, and tone to improve optimally. I have had good results with the venus viva, fillers, and recently significantly better outcomes when we add PRP to the viva protocol. Subscision (releasing the attachment of the scar) of the scar and micronized fat are also great to add on to get better skin quality and better blood supply to scarred areas. Your doctor needs to look at your skin to determine the type of scarring you have, how firmly it is attached to underlying structures, how pervasive the scarring is, and what the health of the unaffected tissue is surrounding the scars. There may also be hormonal issues that can lead to severe cystic acne- which tends to scar, as well as hormonal issues that great greater levels of hyperpigmentation, or melasma on the skin. All of these issues are important considerations to ensure your treatments do not create darker spots, or worsening of some aspects of the scarred tissue. IT is critical to understand that scarred skin needs A LOT of TLC, patients, and treatments that are aimed at all the different aspects influencing both the original creation of the scar, and the resolution of the scar, once formed. Best to have someone go through your particular skin issues with you - and walk you through a treatment plan that you will work on over time. Hope that was helpful! Dr R

Answer: Is Venus Viva better than chemical peels for acne scarring? Good Day. Thank you for your question.Answer: YESVenus viva produces a better result than chemical peels (specifically TCA) for acne scarring. Since its FDA approval, practitioners like myself have altered the treatment method to optimize outcome. Using adequate anesthesia with 1-2 hours of topical anesthesia, trigeminal sensory nerve blocks and oral sedation (ativan and Norco) ensure that maximum energy can be delivered to optimize the smoothing of acne scarring. We use the maximum device energy with 3- 5 passes yield the best results. Using the Venus viva nanofractional RF technology along with magnetics minimizes perceived pain. However, to further the results, the following post-treatment adjuvant therapy should be considered: (as well as sunblock and moisturizers)1. Patients own serum growth factors from the blood (PRP) immediately after2. Using Alastin extracellular matrix modulator serum of ten days post-treatment3. Thereafter, using human stem cell derived growth factors such as Stemulation or Regenica for 6 weeks. You may also want to consider volume replacement under the acne scarred skin, which may include silastic implants, fat transfer or Bellafill filler (the only FDA approved filler for acne scarring). In summary, the Venus Viva combined with the post-treatment serums and growth factors will optimize your result and smooth your skin.Good luck with your treatment.
