Implant Pain Caused by Retainer, Is Something Wrong with the Implant?

Question

I had my first surgery for my implant a little over a week ago. I have a retainer from my orthodontist with a tooth on it to use until I get my permanent tooth. But when I wear my retainer it makes my implant hurt very bad.. Like its extremely painful. Wondering if it is my retainer or something is wrong with my implant?

After a dental implant is placed, it is natural to have some minor swelling and inflammation as this will be present for all surgical procedures. However, there should be no pressure over the surgical site as this may cause problems with the implant including pain and loss of osseo-integration. It would be wise to go back to either your restorative dentist or surgeon to evaluate your condition and make the necessary corrections.

The retainer could possibly too tight in that area, either due to the fit of the retainer or because of residual swelling. The fake tooth and the borders of the retainer should be trimmed, but DO NOT touch the implant area or it could fail.

There is probably some residual swelling from the implant surgery, and the retainer is pressing on it too much. Bring your retainer into your dentist and show him.

Something is wrong. See yor dentist or orthodontist asap and keep the retainer out until you do. The most likely reason is that the retainer tooth is putting too much pressure on the implant and needs to be reduced underneath. The retainer was likely made from a mouth mould taken before the implant was placed.

There should be NO pressure from the retainer on your implant.  Have your dentist relieve the pressure by adjusting the retainer, immediately.  Prolonged pressure will cause the implant to fail.
