Hyperpigmentation Staining Following Rhinoplasty? (photo)

Question

I am 2 months post op rhinoplasty and had extensive bruising and swelling after my surgery. This resulted in some hyperpigmentation staining under my eyes. Would a short term treatment of prescription bleaching cream help get rid of this? Or would you recommend giving it time? Also someone made the comment I had what looked like mild tear troughs. I never had this prior to my surgery, could this be a illusion due to the bruising and swelling still present?

Increase pigmentation results from stimulation to the skin even okay increased melanin production. In time this will subside in the color should return to normal. From the photograph it appears as though there is a small tear trough issue which would have been there prior to rhinoplasty.

Hi LB, It may take months for the broken down blood products under your eyes to disappear. I would not bother with bleaching creams. What does seem to help is the application of warm compresses for about 10 to 15 minutes one or two times per day. A V-beam laser treatment may also help. Be patient and it will get better. 		Occasionally, if there was extensive bruising, hemosiderin (which is found inside red blood cells) can deposit into the skin and cause the darkness
	
		There are special lasers, like the V-Beam, that can help dissipate the hemosiderin a little more quickly, topical bleaching creams may not work
	
		On its own, it may take a few months for it to go away.

Best to discuss in person with your surgeon. But swelling and staining can take 6 months to improve. Bleaching creams or IPL lasers help. As for a tear trough deformity very hard to determine after only a few months following a rhinoplasty.

Bleaching creams will be of no value for darkness around the lower eyelids after a rhinoplasty.  Over time this discoloration will gradually fade.
