What can be done about fat necrosis?

I'm 4 months post op from a breast reduction. I had a 6 and 1/2 hour surgery to reduce my L breasts to DD breasts. After a month I pointed out to my surgeon a large lump at the top of my right breast, about an inch long and a half inch wide. He says it is fat necrosis but didn't say if there was anything to be done. So now that its been 4 months and it still there. It bothers me... Is there anything I can do?

Thanks so much for reaching out. Fact the closest on its own is not dangerous. But if it’s very bothersome and hurts sometimes it can be removed in surgery. This however may leave you with a contour abnormality depending on how large of a piece of fat necrosis needs to be removed.   Sure you keep in close contact with your surgeon to figure out the best plan.

There are pros and cons of removing areas of fat necrosis. At this stage massage and possible deep lymphatic massage would be of benefit. I wouldn't consider anything for 12 months and best to ask your PS for advice on massage etc.

Fat necrosis may be removed by surgery, however, you may have a different contour if the fat removed is too big. Your best resource of information regarding this would be your surgeon. He/she knows your condition best and would be able to determine the best possible course to take to improve your results. Schedule an appointment with your surgeon as soon as possible.

I am sorry to hear about the problem you are experiencing with fat necrosis after breast reduction surgery.Fat necrosis may gradually decrease in size (may even liquefy and drain)  spontaneously. Other times, resection of the unhealthy tissue is necessary. If resection is undertaken it should be done in a conservative fashion avoiding removal of surrounding healthy tissue.  Best to communicate your concerns and discuss options with your plastic surgeon in person. Best wishes.
