I have left shoulder pain after gastric sleeve. Is this normal?

I had my gastric sleeve 4 days ago now I’m doing much better with pain I’m walking more The only issue I’m having is left shoulder pain it’s not a really bad pain but it’s there I ask my surgeon and he said that’s normal for the first 15days or so Just wondering if it’s normal or not thanks

Yes, left shoulder pain after gastric sleeve surgery is common and usually caused by gas used during laparoscopic surgery. The gas can irritate the diaphragm, which shares nerve connections with the shoulder (referred pain). It typically lasts anywhere from a few days to two weeks. Walking, using a heating pad, and staying hydrated can help relieve it. If the pain worsens, lasts longer than expected, or is accompanied by other symptoms like fever or difficulty breathing, contact your surgeon again. But based on what you described, it sounds normal and should improve soon.

Having some shoulder pain the first week after surgery isn't uncommon, when a surgery is performed using laparoscopy the surgeon will inflate your abdomen with gas so they can better navigate the instruments and see what they are doing.   They should remove as much as they can before closing, but some may remain and it will rise upward, meaning you may feel it in your upper back and shoulders.  The best way to get that gas to dissipate is by walking as soon and as often as you can after surgery.

I'm sorry you are having a hard time, for the first 15 days you will feel some discomfort, because of the gases, and your stomach getting used to the food remember to always keep in touch with your main doctor.
In addition to other criteria such as medical indications and safety, behavioral health assessments, and so forth I recommend that you go to your certified doctor so he can guide you and do the check up necessary to assist you.
