I recently had a tummy tuck along with liposuction to flanks hips and back. I follow a lot of Plastic Surgeons on various social media platforms. I came across this one dr who said that wearing a binder after a tummy tuck is dangerous because “since you are disconnecting blood flow, you can get into trouble if you compress it. Therefore he does not require his patients to use them. I have never heard of anyone that got a TT that their dr said not to wear one. Please advise if this is necessary.
Answer: The Role of Compression Garments After Tummy Tuck and Liposuction Wearing a compression garment or binder after a tummy tuck and liposuction is a common post-operative recommendation by many plastic surgeons. These garments are typically used to support the healing process, reduce swelling, and help the skin conform to the new body contours. However, there are differing opinions on their use, as you’ve noticed from your research. Compression garments work by applying consistent pressure, which can help minimize fluid buildup and improve blood circulation to the area, thereby aiding in a smoother recovery. Nevertheless, some surgeons express concerns that excessive or improperly used compression can indeed impede blood flow and potentially lead to complications, such as tissue necrosis or blood clots. Here are some points to consider when deciding whether to use a compression garment: Surgeon's Recommendation: Follow your own surgeon’s post-operative instructions closely, as they are familiar with your specific case and surgical details. Proper Fit and Use: Ensure that the compression garment is properly fitted and not too tight. It should provide support without causing discomfort or significant constriction. Duration of Use: Typically, compression garments are recommended for a specific period, which may vary based on the extent of your surgery and your individual healing process. Signs of Complications: Be vigilant for any signs of complications such as excessive swelling, unusual pain, or changes in skin color, and contact your surgeon immediately if these occur.

Answer: The Importance of a Binder After a Tummy Tuck Thank you for your question regarding the necessity of wearing a binder after a tummy tuck. This is a common point of discussion, and the recommendations often vary depending on a surgeon's philosophy and experience. In my practice, I require my patients to wear a binder after a tummy tuck because I believe compression is an essential part of the healing process. The binder serves multiple purposes: it helps reduce swelling, supports the newly tightened abdominal muscles, and minimizes the risk of fluid accumulation, such as seromas. Compression also promotes better skin adherence to the underlying tissue, leading to a smoother and more contoured result. While it’s true that excessive or improperly placed compression can potentially compromise blood flow, the risk is minimized with a well-designed surgical plan and a properly fitted binder. For this reason, I ensure my patients have detailed instructions on how to wear the binder correctly and for how long, typically for at least six weeks postoperatively. Every surgeon has their own preferences based on their techniques and patient outcomes, which may explain why the doctor you referenced advises against binders. However, in my experience, the benefits of wearing a binder significantly outweigh the risks, provided it’s used as directed. Ultimately, it’s important to follow the postoperative instructions of your surgeon, as they know the specifics of your surgery and how best to optimize your results. If you have concerns, I recommend discussing them with your surgeon to ensure you’re comfortable with the recovery plan. Sincerely, Dr. Katzen

Answer: Binder Binders can be very helpful for most patients, and I use binders in all my patients. However, there are a few who are overly anxious about getting the best results and they tighten the binder too much. If it is too tight, then circulation can be decreased, and tissue could even die. Since numbness is present, the patient may not realize what she/he is doing with the binder until it is too late. Just like with most things, the binder needs to be worn appropriately.

Answer: Postoperative protocol Dear cruisegirl223, I understand your concern. It is best that you consult your plastic surgeon regarding post operative care and management (i.e including massage techniques and timing) specific to your case. Your surgeon knows your condition well and has preferences on when and what to use for faster healing and recovery. Post operative care and management depends on the type of surgery performed and the technique used during surgery among other factors. It is best, however, that you follow your plastic surgeon's advice on post operative care management for a smooth and faster healing and recovery. Answer: Post op Thank you for your question. While it is not mandatory to wear a binder after a tummy tuck, I think you will find most surgeons do recommend at least some form of compression for at least a few weeks. Please follow the recommendation of your plastic surgeon as each surgeon has his or her own post op treatment plan based on the technique that is used.
