The epidermis or superficial layer of the skin has separated from the dermis. This may be due to swelling. In any event this should be kept clean and well lubricated. Aquaphor is in emollient I often times have patients use for second-degree Burns. Your own surgeon will have his own philosophy of treatment.

Honestly, every surgeon has his or her own wound care protocol. Since your surgeon has seen and assessed your condition in person, he or she is the best person to answer your question. Best, Dr. Nazarian

Every surgeon is a bit different in terms of the type of wound care they prefer. It is best to follow your surgeon's instructions. Good luck.

I generally prefer something like Aquaphor, which is a "thinner" form of Vaseline.  You can then cover it with a non-stick dressing, such as Telfa, as long as the wound is closed.  If it's open you may need to start with an absorbent dressing (like gauze) before switching to Aquaphor/Telfa.  You should of course follow the directions of your own surgeon.Using Bacitracin for longer periods increase the risk of a contact dermatitis (irritation) from the base (of the ointment), which is why I prefer the less complex Aquaphor (available OTC).I hope that this helps and good luck,Dr. Alan EnglerMember of #RealSelf100
