Breast reduction - is this old blood/hematoma draining from incision site? (photos)

Question

I got a breast lift/minor reduction done Novemver 23rd. Left breast has given me problems. Was really swollen/bruised etc. For the past week it has reopened at the base of the 'T' incision and bleeding constantly. This morning I gently pressed on my breast and it oozed dark red syrupy blood...is this a hematoma draining? Should I be worried about this??? Next appointment with surgeon isn't for a week...already on antibiotics and cleaning it every day. Ugh :(

Yes, it sounds and looks as if you have a hematoma. It should resolve on its own but always best to err on the side of caution so make an appointment with your surgeon so that he or she can assess you in person. Best, Dr. Nazarian

Thank you for your question.It is difficult to evaluate completely by these photos.  But from what you are describing and what I can see in the picture it does appear you may have a hematoma on the left side.  The dark drainage you are getting is old blood from the hematoma leaking out.  I would recommend calling your surgeon, so that they can evaluate in person to make sure nothing more needs to be done other than the dressing changes you are doing. Good luck with recovery.

Based on your history and photos it is, most likely, a hematoma (old blood).  If so, it should resolve on its own.  It may continue to drain for a few days, and it may close and then open up again, etc.  But it should settle down and, in the absence of systemic symptoms (fever, chills, redness, etc) then the treatment may be exactly what you're doing right now.  And, normally, you will still have good healing and an excellent result.However, you cannot assume that, and let it go at that.  You should call your PS and let him or her know what is happening.  You may need to be seen earlier that your currently scheduled appointment, or maybe your surgeon will be comfortable handling this without seeing you in person.
