Can Retin-A 0.05% cream help in the removal of my birth mark? (photos)

Hello. I have had a birth mark on my left cheek since my birth. It has no cause that I know of. The skin is even and it only appears as discoloration. I am 29 years of age and have hidden in through make up. But you can imagine how it would feel to have something so big on the face. My dermatologist has recommended retin-a 0.05% for topical use to lighten it over time. Do you think it's going to help or is it a lost cause?
