Can ferritin of 30 cause hair loss?

I went through Talogen Effluvium after I had my baby. Then 4 months later I started shedding again. It’s been going on for 10 months now. It falls out, grows in and then falls again. The hairs have a white bulb on the end and there isn’t any concentration of what one particular area. I decided to check my blood work which I had done at the onset and my ferritin was 30. That was 11 months ago. I started taking iron supplements 1 month ago and ferritin is now at 52 but I’m still shedding.

The most important diagnoses in this situation are 1) the development of female androgenetic alopecia post-partum and 2) prolonged telogen effluvium after delivery. Both are possible to have together. Other diagnoses may also be possible but FPHL and TE are the main considerations.  Any women with prolonged shedding of hair 1 year post partum needs a careful evaluation to rule out androgenetic alopecia. This point is too often missed.  Your ferritin is likely unrelated.

Iron deficiency anemia is a common cause of hair loss and hair thinning. This is more common in women.

The results may vary slightly among laboratories, but in general, normal ferritin levels range from 12 to 300 nanograms per milliliter of blood (ng/mL) for males and 12 to150 ng/mL for females so your level is not very low. See a doctor to find out the cause of your hair loss
