For patients doing a series of Fraxel restore treatments, I prefer they hold off on exercise for 24-48 hours after the procedure to reduce the incidence of swelling. Patients having Fraxel repair procedure, which is a more aggressive laser resurfacing procedure, will likely need to stop exercising for 7-10 days. Also, sun exposure must be avoided immediately after either laser procedure until the skin is healed enough to begin applying sunscreen.
Depending upon the type fo laser that you have performed, i.e. IPL, Erbium, Co2, or fractionated system, the level of depth and time to full recovery will be different. The recovery also depends upon your age, health, and tissue characteristics. If you participate in exercises too quickly, you will prolong your swelling and your recovery. As a general rule of thumb, avoid exercising for one week after your laser treatment. Once you've reached this period, work yourself back slowly. Be sure to discuss with your physican as he/she as an understanding of the level of depth that was penetrated and the expected outcome.
