Should I see a tattoo removal tech for my Melasma? (Photo)

Question

I have a very severe case of Melasma. I noticed that the Picosure laser is also used for tattoo removal. Would it be safe to consult with technician who primarily does tattoo removal for my melasma? Is the same settinga used for both Melasma and tattoo removal?

Melasma can be very difficult to treat.  It is often very reactive to heat.  Our melasma protocol is to use a low pulse count with the Flat lens and keep the surface cool with our chiller unit.  We retreat every 4 weeks for 3-6 treatments.  I hope this helps.

Hi!  I would not recommend a technician who primarily does tattoo removal for your melasma.  Melasma is a completely different beast.  It is a challenging condition to treat effectively.  In the wrong hands, the laser will actually STIMULATE more melanocytes, bringing out more pigment and spots.   To treat melasma, I actually recommend multiple modalities such as a consistent, potent daily skincare regimen targeted to treat melasma, chemical peels and PicoSure laser. Best, Dr. Huo

Thanks for your question.  The PicoSure laser can be used for skin rejuvenation or tattoo removal.  There are different handpieces and settings.  More than likely, you will only find a PicoSure in a doctor's office and they will be familiar with rejuvenation settings.Melasma can be very difficult to treat.  It is often very reactive to heat.  Our melasma protocol is to use a low pulse count with the Flat lens and keep the surface cool with our chiller unit.  We retreat every 4 weeks for 3-6 treatments.  I hope this helps.
