Answer: Smoking cessation Thank you for your question. Ideally, any surgeon would prefer that you cease smoking as soon as possible as smoking increases the risk associated with surgery, complications, infection, delayed wound healing, increased bleeding, etc. At the very least, it is preffered that you cease smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery and that your remain free of smoking and the use of nicotine for a minimum of 3-4 weeks after surgery.Best regards,Dr. Lane F. Answer: Stop smoking 30 days prior to surgery Nicotene causes constriction of blood vessels slowing the blood and oxygen delivery to organs, skin and soft tissues. With many surgeries, this reduction in blood flow can compromise wound healing and result in serious and potentially catastrophic complications. Although a single cigarette can have detrimental effects for up to one year, most surgeons recommend smoking cessation at least one month prior to surgery and usually continuing for at least one month after surgery.

Answer: Smoking and plastic surgery. It really depends on the operation. Many operations plastic surgeons do involve peeling up the skin and moving it around - think face lift, tummy tucks and breast lift and breast reduction. Other procedures, not so much.I require my patients to be nicotine free (this includes gum and patches) for at least 6 weeks prior to doing any surgery such as the procedures listed above. And when can they start smoking again? NEVER!If you are interested in plastic surgery, you care about your appearance. A well trained eye like mine can tell a smoker a block away.Chantix has helped a lot of my patients to finally kick the habit. I would make sure to let your surgeon and the anesthesiologist know that you are or were on Chantix. Chantix is very similar to many antidepressants and those medications rarely result in any problems. Good luck with your smoking cessation!
