Klebsiella Oxytoca on BA wound 11 days post-op - is the wound infected? (photos)

Question

I had a bilateral breast augmentation on both of my breasts with 425cc round silicone implants on the 7th of Dec. 11 days post op I started violently vomiting, I went to ED & kept in hospital for 3 days. 2nd day of admission my right breast started oozing- diagnosis; Superficial Surgical Site Infection of Klebsiella Oxytoca. My surgeon is away so I saw my GP for another course of antibiotics & he suggested my wound was no longer infected just open- I was wondering what to make of this statement

If these sensations cause pain, repeated, local self-massage helps.ASYMMETRY: The two breasts commonly heal quite differently. One breast may swell more, feel more uncomfortable, or have a different initial shape. After complete healing, they will be more similar and natural. You must have patience, but if this causes concern, ask questions of the doctor or the nursing staff.SHAPE AND CONTOUR: The final shape of your breasts will start to look its best approximately three (3) months after surgery. It takes time for the skin and muscle to stretch and relax around the new implant. The breast will often look higher, firmer, and “less natural” in the first three (3) months. It can take up to a year to see your final result.FOLLOW-UP EXAMS: These are generally done in 1 week, 2 to 3 weeks, 3 to 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months to 1 year, and 1-2 year intervals. In our office we include all of your follow up appointments in the initial surgical fee.While it takes some time for both the implants and incisions to heal, if you have questions or concerns about the healing process your own plastic surgeon will have the best answers and solutions. If healing is progressing as it should, then follow-up appointments are best and the area can be examined to make sure that everything is going well or if additional work is needed for correction or revision. Thanks for your inquiry and sorry for your struggles, I would be concerned that your infection involves the implant.  If your implant is exposed this is a significant problem.  Please call your surgeon or the covering surgeon to discuss and best of luck.

I am sorry that you are going through this. I recommend that you see a surgeon asap. If your surgeon is away. there should be a covering surgeon that can see you. A plastic surgeon will know best how to handle this. Good luck!

After reviewing your pictures and the provided history, I fear you may have an infection that now involves your breast implant.  Appropriate treatment of the infection may require removal of your implant.  I would advise you to contact your plastic surgeon immediately for reevaluation. Best of luck to you.

I am sorry to hear about the complication you have experience. Based on your photographs and description, I would be very concerned that the underlying breast implant is involved and will ultimately need to be removed before you can heal. Although the last photograph is difficult to evaluate accurately, I would be concerned that a breast implant exposure is present or imminent.  Best to be seen by a plastic surgeon ASAP. Best wishes.
