Is it normal to be super anxious and emotional after rhinoplasty?

I am 4 days post op after having septo-rhinoplasty and I’m not quite sure why, but since having my surgery, I’ve been extremely emotional and anxious not just about the surgery and my upcoming results, but also about my life in general. I am an anxious person normally, but this is an unusually high level of anxiousness for me and I have felt like crying for the past two days. I do not take the pain medication (it makes me too nauseous) , so that cannot be the reason. Is this normal?

Many patients after undergoing rhinoplasty have similar problems like yours. That is the biggest group of patients with postoperative anxiety in our practice. If you can not handle it discuss a short term anxiety treatment (Xanax) with your surgeon or PCP. It will go away. Good luck.

It is not uncommon to feel depressed and emotional after rhinoplasty or any facial cosmetic surgery.  This is normally fairly temporary and tends to improve as the healing process proceeds.  If you feel the need, you may want to see a psychologist or psychiatrist to help with the temporary change in your emotional well being.

What you are experiencing is completely normal.   The crying doesn't help with the swelling, so it would be best to think happy thoughts and be around people who make you smile.  This emotional time soon shall pass.  Think positive and take care of yourself.
