I want to have fillers in my cheeks. I have an allergy to tetanus and it caused anaphylaxis when I was a child. Is it safe for me to have fillers and the product used to dissolve fillers?

I hear your concern, and it’s very important that you’re careful given your history of anaphylaxis. The good news is that dermal fillers and hyaluronidase (the enzyme used to dissolve fillers) are not related to the tetanus vaccine, so your specific allergy to tetanus itself doesn’t automatically mean you’d react to these products.

That said, any history of severe allergic reactions—especially anaphylaxis—does put you in a higher-risk group for potential reactions to new medications or injectables. While it’s rare, both fillers and hyaluronidase can cause allergic responses in sensitive individuals.

What this means is that you should be extra cautious, always make your provider aware of your allergy history, and ideally undergo testing or be in a setting where quick treatment is available in case of a reaction. Your safety comes first, and with the right precautions, your options can be considered more safely.
