Is calf implant surgery painful and can they cause complications as you age?

Dear Krys,  Based on the hundreds of  patients of mine who underwent calf augmentation surgery with implants,  this is an extremely satisfying  procedure. The implants are placed under the muscle fascia (on top of the lateral and medial  Gastroc muscles ) so there is definitely discomfort post operatively,  however it can be well managed with infiltration of long acting local anesthesia (the procedure is done in my practice, most commonly, under spinal anesthesia and sedation )  strong oral pain medication and crutches for 1 week. I teach my patients to do implants displacement massage on the 3rd day after surgery and that helps significantly with quick recovery.  As far as long term complication, I am not aware of any. One of my staff had the procedure 15 years ago and she is very happy with the outcome . She did not have any complication and the shape of the calves got better with time.   Always, consult with experienced board certified plastic surgeons who have vast experience with calf implants surgery and operate in accredited surgery center for your safety. Other than favorable genetics combined with rigorous consistent exercise, there is no other way to grow the calf muscles besides calf implants.  Hence if you have tried exercise with little success then at age of 20 is reasonable to consider surgery. The implants are made of soft semi-solid silicone rubber and placed surgically through a small incision in a crease behind the knee. All surgery comes with post-operative pain and recovery. For calf implants, the first two weeks after surgery is the most difficult time because walking is painful. Recovery usually progresses at a smooth pace from there. Glad to help.
