what other types. or brands are better ? i have never used it outside of it being in a chemical peel (VI peel) so im not sure what to look for, other than it being in a gel base. for absorption especially on combination sun damaged skin.

Yes, I agree with the information below. I would use the Obagi Nuderm in order starting with the face wash. After the last AM step (sunscreen) you can apply makeup or go about your day as usual but for full effectiveness of the system I would not wash your face again.
Hydroquinone is recommended to be used for max of 3 months continuously and then give a break of 3 months. Using it for too long can sometimes lead to exogenous ochronosis. During this time good skin care regimen including non hydroquinone products like Obagi Clear Fx or similar can be used...
If your acne is resistant to the Obagi Nuderm system you more than likely have a form of cystic acne which will require multimodal therapy. Seek the advice of a board certified dermatologist who has treated many acne patients.
