Can I live without nose septum?

Question

I have two perforations in my septum. They might be to big to close, I am wondering what can I do if I won't have the nose septum. Will I have breathing problems or some kind of other life complications because of it? And is there any surgery to fix the quality of life if so happens?

Dear lili94~Thank you for your question.  If you are not having any symptoms, it may not be necessary to close the septal perforation at this time.  If you develop breathing problems or other issues (such as symptomatic crusting or a whistling noise when breathing), you can always have the septum repaired at a later date.  There are many techniques to repair a septal perforation, including local mucosal flaps and grafts.  The repair method depends on the size and location of the perforation.  It may also be possible to non-surgically place a septal button to cover the hole.  Nasal saline sprays with or without antibiotics may help keep the area clean and alleviate symptoms.You did not mention the cause of the perforation; in some cases, a biopsy may be indicated.  Please make sure to have regular follow-up with a physician.Best wishes,Amy Hsu
