Question

I am not a smoker but I have smoked weed a few times after my surgery, I would say 6 weeks after the surgery. I am now nearly 2 months PO and was wondering if my breasts will be ok as I smoked it recently. Thank you.

At two months out you are likely pretty much on the road to be healed. Even though you should not smoke at all, I doubt it would impact you now unless you have to tissue that is susceptible to fat necrosis.

The metabolites in marijuana can have consequences for healing of the surgical wound so it is inadvisable to smoke it at this time. You should be forthright about your use of it with your plastic surgeon.

Thank you for sharing your question. Although marijuana smoking may not have the levels of nicotine and carbon monoxide of cigarettes which does so much damage to the blood supply of fresh incisions, it is certainly not without risks of delaying your healing. Surgeons cringe at the thought of their patients smoking anything just after surgery. I would urge you to quit, at least until fully-healed. Best wishes to you.

Catherine,At this point there is little likelihood of an impact on healing or outcome. However, smoking anything in the perioperative period can cause problems with blood delivery to tissues, particularly with a flap-type surgery like breast reduction where circulation to skin and nipples may be diminished.
