Could blood thinners increase the risk for Botox disseminating to other areas?

I just had a NSTEMI and am on multiple blood thinners that I must remain on for one year before having invasive procedures . I would like to get Botox , but I worry the blood thinners will cause the Botox to disseminate to other areas.

Regarding use of Botox while taking blood thinners: Blood thinner use will increase your chance of bleeding/bruising during the injection and I recommend a skilled injector perform your treatment since there are additional techniques that can mitigate your risk. The primary use of botox is intramuscular use. When injected correctly into the muscle, it is not placed in the vessels and therefore not intended to disseminate around the body. The risk of intravascular injection is the same as when not on blood thinners, and a reason I recommend a trained injector perform your treatments. Facial plastic and oculofacial plastic surgeons can provide a thorough evaluation and treatment to fit your individual situation.

Botulinum toxin (e.g. Botox, Dysport) would not be a problem or issue in someone on blood thinners. Rest assured. Just a higher chance of getting a tiny temporary bruise.

helloan excellent question. although extremely rare, theoretically any botulinum toxin injection could spread to adjacent areas if there is a significant bruise during the procedure and/or pressure is applied to the treated area immediately after the injection. this would be especially important in the periocular area (around the eyes). however, an impeccable technique by your physician should easily avoid this very rare potential issue.

It is always best to see you face to face for a consult and examination however in this case it's very unlikely that you will be at risk of adverse effects from toxin- it's more likely that you may bruise a little more if anything.
