I would like a mommy makeover to include a full tummy tuck, breast lift and some flank area lipo. Im 33 & have had 3 kids. I am healthy but was recently diagnosed with Idiopathic subglottic stenosis. I underwent laser and balloon dilation surgery with my ENT and he has corrected the problem But says I should avoid intubation if possible. Am I still able to get the mommy makeover I want w/o being intubated? I really want the surgery, it's been a dream of mine 14 yes.. Please advise! Thanks.
Answer: Mommy makeover without intubation I am sorry to hear about your problems with your ISS. Do you have severe diastasis that needs to be corrected? This is difficult to do well without general anesthesia and muscle relaxation. If all you need is tightening your abdominal skin with breast surgery and liposuction then an LMA may be adequate. It also will be a good idea to have an anesthesia consult before your surgery. Good luck!

Answer: Intubation Generally intubation is performed during these procedures for your safety in protecting your airway as well as its ability to allow the surgeon the opportunity to optimize your results. Discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon. Depending upon the extent of surgery desired an alternative method may be available. If not, a discussion between the anesthesiologist and your ENT may shed more light on the situation.

Answer: Can I have a Mommy Makeover with being Intubated? Most Plastic Surgeons will recommend General Anesthesia and intubation during a Mommy Makeover since this procedure best protects your airway during the surgery. In my practice, I generally recommend this since I am performing circumferential liposuction and will begin the procedure with you on your stomach. In this position, it is critical that your airway is protected and this is not optimal when using an LMA. The best way to start is to consult with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in your area to discuss your goals and concerns and see if your surgeon is comfortable using an LMA. I hope this helps and wish you the very best. Please let me know if you have any questions. We would love to work with you! All the best, ~Gregory A Buford MD FACS

Answer: Intubation with mommy makeover An alternate device to protect your airway during surgery is an LMA (laryngeal mask airway). This allows for airway management without an actual tube in your trachea. Most anesthesiologists do not use LMAs for longer cases like mommy makeovers because of swelling and laryngeal irritation, but there may be exceptions. Your question really should be handled by a discussion between your otolaryngologist and whoever would be doing your anesthesia. Keep in mind, you can always do the breast and abdominal surgeries separately to keep each procedure time shorter And use an LMA. If you really want the surgery, it should be totally possible as long as you are willing to make adjustments (such as staging the procedures) to avoid damaging the results of your prior subglottic stenosis surgery. Good luck!

Answer: Mommy Makeover Desired - can it be performed without being intubated? Yes, it is possible (but what exactly will be the best option for you will depend on careful consideration of all options and discussion with careful preoperative planning with your anesthesiologist and plastic surgeon). Generally speaking, there are a variety of different "types" of anesthesia options available to patients undergoing mommy makeover surgery. Your best bet: choose your plastic surgeon very carefully; everything else including good judgment/advice/planning, anesthesia provider and safe surgery facility will follow. Best wishes.
