Redness/pigmentation around incision scar 9 months post BA (Photo)

Thanks for your question. It generally takes at least 12 months for scars to fully mature. During this timeframe, scar appearance may change dramatically. I generally recommend sun/UV avoidance (no tanning booths), a good petroleum based moisturizer (Eucerin, Aquaphor), silicone based products, and scar massage to any portions of the scar that are thick or ropey. That being said, scar management can vary from surgeon to surgeon. I suggest you contact your physician for specific recommendations. If the scar pigmentation persists after 1-2 years, laser therapy could be an option. Best of luck!

How to work on the scar? A common question plastic surgeons hear from their patients.First of all, scars can get better for up to 2 years after surgery. Looking at your scar, it seems you are on track to have a thin scar without redness. There are a few things that might help during the two year process.The first thing is using silicone scar pads. They are thin strips with a sticky glue on one side. You place them over the scar at least 8 hours a day. Take them off when you shower or exercise. They are reusable, so one box should last you at least 6 months. You can find the pads at most pharmacies in the band aid section. They cost about $15 a box.When a scar is persistently red, Intense Pulse Light (IPL) can be used to get the redness out. It will take a few treatments spaced several weeks apart. The  cost varies, but could be a few hundred dollars.My opinion is that the scar will continue to improve over time on its own. Start with the silicone scar pads and consider IPL treatment if you see no improvement.Goood Luck!

Thanks for the great question. Scars take awhile to heal and mature. They are typically red from about 3-6 months after surgery. Then from months 6-12 then fade and lighten in color. You still have a few months where the scars will likely continue to change. If they're still red, then laser or IPL treatments can be performed to help lighten the scar tissue to match the surrounding skin. Discuss these options with your surgery.
