I am 23 years old. I am noticing fine lines under my eyes and crows feet already forming. Cause? Treatment options? (Photo)

Question

What is typically the cause of these lines already forming? Is there anything I can do to stop them or to treat them? If so what are the best options? I currently have been using a glycolic mask for the last 6 months a few times a week. No change to the lines.

Fine lines under the eye in the young patient is generally attributed to skin and early volume loss. Good skin care is the pinnacle of treatment in this area, which would include skin type appropriate cleanser and toner, with adequate hydration and active skin care with a topical retinol, growth factor, and or anti-oxidant designed for around the eye. Glycolic acid only exfoliates and has little effect on lines, but when coupled with a good skin care regimen it can help to promote absorption of active ingredients. Mild under eye chemical peels and resurfacing may help. For outer eye crows feet, a small amount of neuromodulator could be beneficial including Botox or Dysport. If these incremental steps don't help significantly, a lower eyelid volumetric injectable could be added, like Juvederm or Restylane.

Hello taylrthmpsn,Thanks for your question.In your situation, you live in Texas which means your exposure to sunlight and other environmental issues that age skin are greater.Prevention is your best option!This means good sunblock (SPF30) around your eyelid skin area, use of tissue plumpers like hyaluronic acid serums, and use of Botox (to reduce dynamic motion of select eyelid muscles).On top of this, a good diet with lots of water, vitamin C, fresh fruits and vegetables, etc. is super important.To reduce what you see currently, fractional laser resurfacing can be used to smooth out fine lines and soften wrinkles by ablating top lays of older skin and replacing with new collagen.  This tightens and smooths as a result.  After this you get back on the prevention cycle.A plastic surgeon with specialization in facial rejuvenation is a someone you should consult with in your area.They can evaluate your concerns in person and give you a comprehensive plan to help.Good luck,Dr. Shah
