Is it unusual for a patient to have a reaction to the stitches? Is there a way to test if a person will be allergic to them?

Is it unusual for a patient to have a reaction to the stitches and is there a way to test and tell before the surgery if a person will be allergic to them? I read of a person here on Realself that had dissolvable stitches in her incision and instead of dissolving they worked their way to the top and she pulled them out!! She went on to say that she had an awful scar because of it. Does that really happen to some people? Thank you!
