The mainstays of fluid removal after liposuction are compression garments and frequent massages. In the first few weeks, the massages should be aggressive and best handled by a professional massage therapist, not by you or your family member trying to figure things out on your own. You simply won't massage well enough. All of my patients start professional massages 3 times per week starting the day after surgery for teh first month. The results are fantastic.

It is very common to have bruising and swelling for weeks to months after liposuction procedures. What is most important is that you follow your surgeons post operative instructions and continue compression. The compression you have doen't seem to be large enough or placed on evenly so please have that double checked by your physician.  My patients all get custom garments that fit their body.  If you are concerned, lymphatic massage and Velashape or Venus Legacy treatments can be used to improve the swelling and help the skin tighten.  But, you should wait 7-10 days until treatments.  There is no reason to "massage" out drainage, continue with appropriate compression. Speak to your physician if you are concerned.  I am more concerned that you were not provided with good compression or instructions.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Usually the remaining fluid is absorbed by the surrounding tissues. I am not sure why your doctor is telling you to squeeze it out.

It is natural for there to be drainage from the port sites (entry sites) after SmartLipo.  I actually also recommend that patients take their pain medication 30 minutes before showering, and gently massage out some of the excess fluid, but not too aggressively.  Although not a necessary maneuver, it expedites the time you have to wear post-op absorption pads/dressings.  However, if you do not feel comfortable massaging, or if it is too uncomfortable, simply apply compression and the body will absorb all excess fluid naturally.Good luck with your healing process!!Windell Davis Boutte, MD
