I have a slightly recessed chin and was interested in getting an implant. Would this make my lip incompetency worse? Would a sliding genioplasty be a better option?
Answer: Will a chin implant worsen lip incompetency? I think a chin implant would produce a nice improvement without deepening the labiomental sulcus in an untoward manner and without making lip incompetence worse. The chin implant will support the lower lip to some extent.Find a board certified plastic surgeon who performs hundreds of facial procedures and chin implants each year. Answer: Implant should be ok From my experience, I worry about worsened lip incompetence when there is a deepened crease below the lip (the labio-mental crease), which does not appear to be the case in your situation. Accordingly, a chin implant should work just fine for you. While genioplasty should also work quite well, it can create a slight depression to the side of the chin that may not be noticeable in your youth, but might become more of an issue with aging. Finally, choose a relatively conservative size of implant. You have an excellent relationship between your chin and neck which serves to lesson the impact of your small chin. Conversely, too large of an implant might masculinize the lower portion of your face and/or look inappropriate.

Answer: Sliding Genioplasty for Lower Lip Incompetence With documented lower lip incompetency, a sliding genioplasty would be a better procedure than a chin implant. With the bony movement it would be more assured approach to curing the lip incompetency. If placed from below, a chin implant is not likely to make the lip incompetency worse and may even make it a little better but not as successful as a sliding genioplasty will.
