I've seen a few plastic surgeons and none of them offered sliding genioplasty, only chin implants. Why is that? Who performs sliding genioplasty? Looking for a doctor in or near Chicago...
Answer: Why don't more plastic surgeons offer sliding genioplasty? Sliding genioplasty is usually performed by oral surgeons, not plastic surgeons. The genioplasty sometimes performed the upper jaw , the lower jaw, or both which requires expensive knowledge of how the teeth fit together. For purely cosmetic purposes a chin implant is performed, which will not affect the way the teeth fit together. For many examples of chin implants, please see the link and the video below

CONTACT NOW Answer: Chin implant/Sliding Genioplasty? Without an exam your question cannot be answered. You will need to see an Oral/Maxillofacial surgeon to see if othognathic surgery, genioplasty or using an implant is best for your specific case. It should be noted that patients with severely weak jaws or abnormally functioning jaws may be better treated with other facial surgery (orthognathic surgery), although a chin augmentation may be an option at a later time. These patients should seek the advice of a plastic surgeon to determine which course is right for them. Here is some information to help you make this decision: Candidates for Chin Augmentation - Patients whose chin profiles are weak but have normally functioning jaws are candidates for Chin Augmentation. Many of these candidates have used injectable fillers in the past to strengthen the protrusion of their chins, but are looking for a permanent solution. If you are one of these patients, then you are a likely candidate for chin augmentation #weakchin #chinimplant

Answer: Sliding Genioplasty Working with moving the chin bone versus placing an implant on top of it requires a different experience and training. It is not necessarily a harder operation than a chin implant, just a different one.

Answer: Why don't more plastic surgeons offer sliding genioplasty? Hi, I have performed many facial shaping procedures, including Chin Augmentation with dermal fillers or silastic chin implants, for over 30 years. Sliding genioplasty is far more invasive of a procedure than augmenting the chin with a silastic chin implant. The other advantages of using a silastic chin implant are: quick procedure which can be performed using local infiltration, speedy recovery, far less prone to motor nerve or sensory nerve injury, implant can easily be removed. Personally, I'd add another advantage for using silastic chin implants and that's a greater ability to shape and correct weak chins. Chin implants offer a greater degree of "shape correction" and forward projection than a sliding genioplasty that re-positions some portion of an already weak chin bone. I can't imagine selecting a bone surgery when there's a quicker, easier, safer and more effective option of having a silastic chin implant. This is most likely why you received that opinion during your consultations. When the chin is weak, this creates an imbalance making the nose appear larger, the mid face top heavy, the lower face looks short, de-emphasizes the lips and allows early formation of a "double chin". The silastic chin implant adds forward projection to the chin thereby creating harmony and balance to the lower face. Using the same incision, liposuction can be performed to reduce the fat and further shape the neck. Excess skin, from below the chin, can also be removed through the same incision. I have found that placement of a silastic chin implant, through a small curved incision under the chin (also allows excess skin removal) to be very safe, quick, highly effective and far less invasive than a sliding genioplasty. I perform chin implant surgery in 30 minutes or less, often using a local anesthetic alone. Hope this helps.

Answer: Genioplasty vs Chin Implant I started to answer this question then I noticed the reply by Dr. Eppley. I would agree totally with his comments. I would only add when all you have is a hammer every job begins to look like it's a nail.
