Nipple congestion mean loss of sensation? I'm 4 weeks post BR.

Question

Had nipple congestion and congestion along the border of my areola. Was given nitrobid and it went away. Now I have some pink scarring along the border but my nipple looks normal. Does this mean I'm at increased risk of not regaining sensation? I was having zingers but no more. I'm 4 weeks post op.

No, venous congestion does not necessarily mean that you will not regain sensation.  This is one of those situations where "time will tell".  Keep in mind, that it is not unusual for patients to experience temporary hypo-or hypersensitivity after breast surgery.  Best wishes for an outcome that you will be pleased with long-term.

What you are describing after breast reduction happens from time to time. But, no, I do not think that means you will not get your sensation back. Almost all breast reduction patients have some overall decrease in sensation (certainly early on in the first few months of healing), but the nerve endings tend to "find their way back," so to speak. Hang in there.

Hello and thank you for your question. A physical examination should be helpful in determining if you are at risk for compromise of nipple sensation. Congestion would suggest that there was decreased venous outflow of blood. It may or may not be associated with sensory changes.
