Collagen is one of the major building blocks in our body. There are several different forms, each of which has a unique molecular structure.During liposuction, predominantly fat cells are removed.Collagen is found throughout most of our tissues. It is inevitable that some collagen structures are removed during liposuction.Any potential premature aging will be from the result of fat removal rather than collagen changes.A lack of volume in combination with a lack of skin elasticity is part of what shows age in later life. As such, these concepts are important to integrate into a comprehensive treatment plan prior to engaging in any cosmetic procedure.Collagen is a protein. Proteins are long chains of molecules called amino acids. Any protein that is consumed will be digested and broken down into small segments of amino acids. This is done in the small intestine from an enzyme secreted by the pancreas called proteases. The short segments of amino acids can be broken down further and used either for metabolism or further building of new proteins. As such, consumed collagen cannot be absorbed because of the size of the molecule, but, rather, it needs to be chopped up into small pieces first.Best of luck,Mats Hagstrom, M.D.
