Is IPL supposed to get worse before better?

Yes, this can be typical. It can take several weeks for IPL laser results to settle. I usually recommend a combination of treatments with IPL for best results. I suggest adding microneedling/prp, peels and skin care to improve skin quality and tone. IPL is a great treatment for facial rejuvenation. It is difficult to make an assessment without photographs. However sometimes the dark spots may get darker before they get lighter. Any brown pigment picked up by the IPL machine will become temporarily darker, making it look worse and more obvious. Within a few days the dark pigment will begin to flake off, leaving behind either lighter brown pigment than previously or hopefully no pigment at all. Just be gentle on your skin for the next week and pat dry, don't rub. You want the dark areas to flake off naturally, not be rubbed or picked off.
