Got a septoplasty done about a week ago, the odor in my nose is horrible. How long will it be like this?

After sinus and throat surgery, it isn't uncommon for unpleasant smells to linger. This is because of biofilms and bacteria that may be accumulating in the area and in the mucus and saliva. Most of the time, this resolves without intervention like antibiotics, but they may be necessary if you are dealing with an infection. Your surgeon is the best person to evaluate your condition and decide exactly what you should do.
The smell is probably just from crusty blood and mucus where your sinuses are healing. Using a neti pot or a saline nasal rinsing device can gently remove debris and crusts from the healing areas and will lift away extra mucus which may be contributing to the bad smell you are experiencing. Don't be forceful with nasal irrigation, especially following surgery.
Bad smells are somewhat normal during the weeks following sinus surgery but keeping your surgeon informed about your situation will help them evaluate whether there may be a more serious cause.

Thank you for your question.Odor following septoplasty is extremely common. I advise my patients to use normal saline spray several times/day.  This almost always resolves the odor.  This odor can last from weeks to months postoperatively. Be sure to see your surgeon, however, to examine you first and make sure there is no other reason for the odor. Once he/she clears you, try the normal saline spray. Good luck!

Dear Samcham, In my practice this is not a common complaint. I would see your surgeon for an examination and determine if there is something causing the odor and if nothing is apparent  discuss options for treatment. Best regards, Michael V. Elam, M.D.
